March 2000 – Oberdrees, Germany

I assumed that we would never meet. Another continent, with only a weak social tie; plus he was 5 years older than me, which might as well be a generation when you are 14. Still, I remembered him. It was something like a celebrity crush, where probability has no bearing on one’s imagination.

But then, it just so happened that my sister, Johanna, spent the next year with Fran’s family in Germany. And it just so happened that they met and became friends, despite that Achim was, as it happened, on then-mandatory military duty in Goose Bay, Newfoundland. And then, it just so happened that he visited home the same week that I just so happened to visit my sister. That week was the Rhineland’s beloved Karneval though, so perhaps that last happening was not quite so just.

I dressed up as a bug. He was a monk. In a sea of cigarette smoke and warm bodies wrapped in feathers and sparkles and cheap polyester in every colour of the rainbow, we danced on a table that collapsed ceremoniously. He still has the scar on his knee. Calm in the eye of the storm and smiling apologetically, he spoke to me. I cannot recall what he said, but I remember how I felt.

Page 2/15. In case you missed this post, I’ll be writing and illustrating our story over the course of 30 days. It’s a true story, although sometimes it might not seem that way! You can expect new “pages” posted every second day, from September 22-October 21.

Also, you forgot the part where we are somebody else’s abandoned fries. Ha. But don’t forget to write about you and I sitting in the train station in Cologne writing descriptions of our future husbands, and yours was just a description of Achim. Right down to the rosy cheeks.

I forgot about that!! I’ll try and work it in. There are too many details, unfortunately – you, mom, Achim keep reminding me of things to add! Do you still have that list somewhere?
